The Coddling of America
What are we doing to our children?

a?What is your most lofty aspiration? Death for the sake of Allah!a?

That is the charming verse kindergarteners in a Hamas classroom chanted last week during their graduation ceremony. The girls dressed in butterfly costumes. The boys donned camouflage, black masks, green bandanas, and toy semi-automatic rifles. The video aired by the Middle East Media Research Institute features the children wielding swords and guns while mimicking paramilitary exercises.

And how are we preparing the children of the West to defend themselves against these little soldiers of Allah?

Scene 1: In New York City, one nursery school dragged three-year-old toddlers to the office of Rep. Eliot Engel (D., Bronx/Westchester/Rockland), where they sang a?Itas a Small Worlda? around a 12-foot a?Tree of Peace.a? The New York Press reported last week: a?The handmade tree, crafted by 17 children during pre-school class time, was a statement against American troops remaining in Iraq, and a call to pursue peaceful paths to end all world conflicts. This gift, however, seemed more like a Trojan horse, designed to gain an invitation inside so that the childrenas far-left leaning parents could rail against the war and the congressmanas initial vote in support of it.a?

The childrenas teacher, Valerie Coleman-Palansky, defended the stunt thusly: a?I think itas appropriate for 3-year-olds to know that the world needs to be a peaceful place for everybody to live in and a safe place for everybody to live in.a?

Perhaps itas time for Ms. Coleman-Palansky to acquaint herself with the Palestinian Mickey Mouse. The chant of the little jihadists drowns out the Disneyfied reverie: a?What is your most lofty aspiration? Death for the sake of Allah!a?

Scene 2: I have a pet peeve. It goes beyond the antiwar indoctrination rampant in American schools. At the playground and at the mall, I see 5-, 6,- and 7-year-olds walking around with pacifiers in their mouths. Kids old enough to feed and dress themselves. Kids old enough to figure out the remote control and cell phone. Standing upright, suckling on brightly colored binkies.

Where are the parents to yank the rubber from their mouths and force them to grow up? When did child pacification usurp the responsibility of child-rearing?

Scene 3: America is not alone in immersing its future generations in the culture of coddling. British educators have now determined that a?asking pupils to put their hands up when they think they know the answer to a question in class could make quiet children fall behind,a? according to the London Telegraph. To spare students from this awful terror, the British Department of Education is now recommending that children be given 30 seconds of a?thinking timea? before being asked to answer or told to discuss questions in pairs before answering. Instead of teaching students to conquer their shyness and stand up for themselves, educators will be encouraged to pamper them in emotional bubble wrap.

On a separate front, British schools will be administering a?happiness testsa? to children as young as four to ensure high self-esteem. The Telegraph reports that the government has spent 20 million pounds on an a?emotional literacy initiativea? that promotes activities such as a?worry boxes,a? where pupils write down their anxieties and post them into a box, and a?emotional barometers,a? which pupils can use to show classmates the strength of their feeling about a subject.

I return to the video of the Hamas kindergarten class. Their a?emotional barometersa? break through the roof as one toddler with plenty of self-esteem leads the rest in a bloodthirsty call and refrain: a?What is your path? Jihad!a?

a?What is your path? Jihad!a?

Back in London, the tots are taking their mental-health quizzes. Teacher asks: a?How do you feel?a? The sheeple answer: a?Iave been feeling optimistic about the future.a?

Pardon me while I go fill my worry box. Itas a small world, after all.

Obama extends hands to Chavez, Ortega at summit

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad a President Barack Obama offered a spirit of cooperation to America's hemispheric neighbors at a summit Saturday, listening to complaints about past U.S. meddling and even reaching out to Venezuela's leftist leader.
While he worked to ease friction between the U.S. and their countries, Obama cautioned leaders at the Summit of the Americas to resist a temptation to blame all their problems on their behemoth neighbor to the north.
"I have a lot to learn and I very much look forward to listening and figuring out how we can work together more effectively," Obama said.
Obama said he was ready to accept Cuban President Raul Castro's proposal of talks on issues once off-limits for Cuba, including political prisoners held by the communist government.
While praising America's initial effort to thaw relations with Havana, the leaders pushed the U.S. to go further and lift the 47-year-old U.S. trade embargo against Cuba.
To Latin American nations reeling from a sudden plunge in exports, Obama promised a new hemispheric growth fund, an initiative to increase Caribbean security and a partnership to develop alternative energy sources and fight global warming.
As the first full day of meetings began on the two-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago Saturday, Obama exchanged handshakes and pats on the back with Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, who once likened Obama's predecessor, President George W. Bush, to the devil.
In front of photographers, Chavez gave Obama a copy of "The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent," a book by Eduardo Galeano that chronicles U.S. and European economic and political interference in the region.
When a reporter asked Obama what he thought of the book, the president replied: "I thought it was one of Chavez's books. I was going to give him one of mine." White House advisers said they didn't know if Obama would read it or not.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs made a joke about it, noting the president doesn't speak or read Spanish: "I think it's in Spanish, so that might be a tad on the difficult side."
Later, during a group photo, Obama reached behind several leaders at the summit to shake Chavez's hand for the third time. Obama summoned a translator and the two smiled and spoke briefly.
Those two exchanges followed a brief grip-and-grin for cameras on Friday night when Obama greeted Chavez in Spanish.
"I think it was a good moment," Chavez said about their initial encounter. "I think President Obama is an intelligent man, compared to the previous U.S. president."
At a luncheon speech to fellow leaders, Chavez said the spirit of respect is encouraging and he proposed that Havana host the next summit.
"I'm not going to speak for Cuba. It's not up to me ... (but) all of us here are friends of Cuba, and we hope the United States will be, too," Chavez said.
U.S. aides said that Chavez later spoke during a summit session on democratic governance; Obama chose not to speak.
The White House said Chavez was civil in his criticism of the U.S. during a summit meeting, but that there was no discussion of reinstating ambassadors who were kicked out of each other's countries last year. "Relationships depend on more than smiles and handshakes," Obama economic adviser Larry Summers told reporters later.
The State Department welcomed Chavez's outreach.
"Earlier today at the Summit of the Americas President Chavez approached Secretary (Hillary Rodham) Clinton, and they discussed returning ambassadors to their respective posts in Caracas and Washington," said State spokesman Robert Wood. "This is a positive development that will help advance U.S. interests, and the State Department will now work to further this shared goal."
Bolivia President Evo Morales, a close ally of Chavez, said Obama's pledge of a new era of mutual respect toward Latin America rings hollow.
"Obama said three things: There are neither senior or junior partners. He said relations should be of mutual respect, and he spoke of change," Morales said. "In Bolivia ... one doesn't feel any change. The policy of conspiracy continues."
Morales expelled U.S. ambassador Philip Goldberg in September and kicked out the Drug Enforcement Administration the next month for allegedly conspiring with the political opposition to incite violence. Chavez expelled the U.S. ambassador in Venezuela in solidarity. The Bush administration subsequently suspended trade preferences to Bolivia that Bolivian business leaders say could cost 20,000 jobs.
But as the summit neared its close, Chavez said he soon expects to send an ambassador back to Washington.
Obama also extended a hand to Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega, whom President Ronald Reagan spent years trying to drive from power. Ortega was ousted in 1990 elections that ended Nicaragua's civil war, but was returned to power by voters in 2006.
Ortega stepped up and introduced himself to Obama

POPE CALLS ON YOUNG PEOPLE TO FOLLOW CHRIST'S FOOTSTEPS

VATICAN CITY, 6 APR 2009 (VIS) - Seven thousand young people from the archdiocese of Madrid, Spain, who have come to Rome to collect the World Youth Day cross for 2011, were received in audience this morning by the Pope.

Speaking of the cross, the Holy Father encouraged the young people to discover therein "the infinite measure of Christ's love. ... You too must respond to the love of Christ", he told them, "offering your own lives to Him with love. In this way preparations for World Youth Day, which you have begun with great enthusiasm and dedication, will be repaid with the hoped-for fruits of those events: renewal and strengthening of the experience of meeting Christ, Who died and rose again for us".

"Follow Christ's footsteps! He is your goal, your path and your prize. In the theme I chose for WYD Madrid, St. Paul invites us to live 'rooted and built in Christ, established in the faith'", said the Pope.

He then invited the young people to "form yourselves in the faith which gives meaning to your lives, and strengthen your convictions in order to remain firm in the face of the difficulties of everyday life. I also exhort you, as you journey towards Christ, to draw in your young friends, companions of study or work, that they too may recognise and confess Him as the Lord of their lives. In order to do this, let the power of the Most High that is within you - the Holy Spirit - reveal Himself in all His beauty".

"Young people today", he went on, "need to discover the new life that comes from God, to quench themselves in the truth that has its source in Christ Who died and rose again, and that the Church received as a treasure for all mankind".

Referring then to World Youth Days, the Pope expressed the view that "they reveal the dynamism of the Church and her eternal youth". In this context he pointed out that "those who love Christ love the Church with the same passion, because she enables us to live close to the Lord".

"Cultivate, then, initiatives that enable young people to feel they are members of the Church, in full communion with her pastors and with Peter's Successor. Pray together, opening the doors of your parishes, associations and movements so that everyone may feel in the Church as in their own home, where they are loved with the love of God. Celebrate and live your faith with immense joy, which is the gift of the Spirit".

The Holy Father explained that on the cross "Christ defeated sin and death by the total giving of Himself. For this reason", he concluded, "we must embrace and adore the Lord's cross, make it our own, accept its weight as Simon of Cyrene did, in order to participate in the only thing that can redeem all of humanity. ... Become ever more worthy of the cross and you will never be ashamed of this supreme sign of love".

I want to use a dynamic JavaScript menu in my web site, but it explicitly has to be Open Source, "recognised by the Open Source Initiative".

I've found the perfect script on www.dynamicdrive.com. The terms of use *look* Open Source but I don't know if it's officially recognised as 'open source' or just 'free'..?

Any pointers (especially links) would be appreciated

I could not believe this came from an English newspaper. Leave it to the creators of the language, the English, to express distinctly what happened in the election of Obama. We all should examine who, how and why this cult of personality was created. Obama doesn't have a clue about what he is about to undertake. This individual could not have gotten a security clearance if he had joined the military service. Now he is about to be the Commander in Chief of the U.S. armed forces.

A victory for the hysterical Oprah Winfrey, the mad racist preacher Jeremiah Wright, the mainstream media who abandoned any sense of objectivity long ago, Europeans who despise America largely because they depend on her, comics who claim to be dangerous and fearless but would not dare attack genuinely powerful special interest groups. A victory for Obama-worshippers everywhere. A victory for the cult of the cult. A man who has done little with his life but has written about his achievements as if he had found the cure for cancer in between winning a marathon and building a nuclear reactor with his teeth. Victory for style over substance, hyperbole over history, rabble-raising over reality.

A victory for Hollywood, the most dysfunctional community in the world. Victory for Streisand, Spielberg, Soros and Sarandon. Victory for those who prefer welfare to will and interference to independence. For those who settle for group think and herd mentality rather than those who fight for individual initiative and the right to be out of step with meager political fashion.

Victory for a man who is no friend of freedom. He and his people have already stated that media has to be controlled so as to be balanced, without realizing the extraordinary irony within that statement. Like most liberal zealots, the Obama worshippers constantly speak of Fox and Limbaugh, when the vast bulk of television stations and newspapers are drastically liberal and anti-conservative. Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer said that just as pornography should be censored, so should talk radio. In other words, one of the few free and open means of popular expression may well be cornered and beaten by bullies who even in triumph cannot tolerate any criticism and opposition.

A victory for those who believe the state is better qualified to raise children than the family, for those who prefer teachers' unions to teaching and for those who are naively convinced that if the West is sufficiently weak towards its enemies, war and terror will dissolve as quickly as the tears on the face of a leftist celebrity.

A victory for social democracy even after most of Europe has come to the painful conclusion that social democracy leads to mediocrity, failure, unemployment, inflation, higher taxes and economic stagnation. A victory for intrusive lawyers, banal sentimentalists, social extremists and urban snobs.

Congratulations, America!

Liberal of course will complain. No one has any right to an opinion but them. And of course everything that is not pro-Obama according to them is not a reliable source. Cry Babies can unite here.

I hope this will help you.

1.The highest growth in the gross domestic product? Harry Truman, a democrat

2.The highest growth in jobs? Bill Clinton, a democrat

3.The biggest increase in personal disposable income after taxes? Lyndon Johnson, a democrat

4.The highest growth in industrial production? John Kennedy, a democrat.

5.The highest growth in hourly wages? Lyndon Johnson, you guessed it, a democrat

6.The lowest misery index (inflation plus unemployment)? Harry Truman, a democrat

7.The lowest inflation? Truman, a democrat

8.The largest reduction in the deficit? Bill Clinton, a democrat

a? The Clinton administration presided over the longest peacetime economic expansion in U.S. history. When Clinton left office, there was a ten-year projected budget surplus of $1.6 trillion.
a? In less than a year and a half, Republican George W. Bush wiped out that projected budget surplus, and within three years, he turned the $236 billion surplus he inherited into a $375 billion deficit.

Keep in mind that these figures are from George W. Bush's first term. He has soared to new heights of fiscal irresponsibility during his second term and continues to set records in economic incompetence.

The national debt is now more than $10 trillion.

"[A]s much as Republicans would like to tag Barack Obama and Democrats as big spenders, it's Republicans who have been America's biggest spenders. It's not even close.... [S]ince 1945, when Republicans have been in charge of both the White House and Congress, they have never, not once, reduced spending.... Reagan ran up a bigger debt than every president before him combined. The budget deficit exploded under his leadership and the national debt tripled.... [T]he debt has grown from under $1 trillion before Reagan to over $10 trillion after George Bush! And, yet, with all of this spending, we still don't have national health insurance and Social Security is more endangered than ever."-- Bruce Tenenbaum, HuffingtonPost.com, 10/16/08.

Do you need a job, or maybe a second job, or a third job?
a?"You work three jobs?... Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that."-- George W. Bush, to a divorced mother of three, 2/4/05 .
Why did Republican Senators filibuster these popular initiatives?
a?"I think [Democrats' inability to pass legislation] will give the Republicans the one opening they are going to have in 2008. Everything is running against the Republicans, but I think they have a chance if they argue that the Democrats have been in charge and they are the do-nothing Congress."-- Conservative pundit Charles Krauthammer, Fox News, 7/24/07.
To paraphrase a cranky, old presidential candidate, "The Republicans would rather sabotage Congress than lose an election."

A recent story has popped up in FoxSports news, about a recent happening at Safeco Field in seattle.
From FXSports on MSN:
Most of the time, a kiss is just a kiss in the stands at Seattle Mariners games. The crowd hardly even pays attention when fans smooch.

Sirbrina Guerrero was told to stop kissing another woman at a Mariners game last week. (Elaine Thompson / Associated Press)
But then last week, a lesbian complained that an usher at Safeco Field asked her to stop kissing her date because it was making another fan uncomfortable.

The incident has exploded on local TV, on talk radio and in the blogosphere and has touched off a debate over public displays of affection in generally gay-friendly Seattle.

"Certain individuals have not yet caught up. Those people see a gay or lesbian couple and they stare or say something," said Josh Friedes of Equal Rights Washington. "This is one of the challenges of being gay. Everyday things can become sources of trauma."

As the Mariners played the Boston Red Sox on May 26, Sirbrina Guerrero and her date were approached in the third inning by an usher who told them their kissing was inappropriate, Guerrero said.

The usher, Guerrero said, told them he had received a complaint from a woman nearby who said that there were kids in the crowd of nearly 36,000 and that parents would have to explain why two women were kissing.

"I was really just shocked," Guerrero said. "Seattle is so gay-friendly. There was a couple like seven rows ahead making out. We were just showing affection."

On Thursday, after an internal investigation, the Mariners said in a news release that their seating staff had acted appropriately, and the couple was approached because of their behavior a which included "making out" and "groping" in the stands a and not their sexual orientation.

View more photos >>"We have a strict nondiscrimination policy at the Seattle Mariners and at Safeco Field, and when we do enforce the code of conduct it is based on behavior, not on the identity of those involved," Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale said earlier this week.

In the release, the Mariners said the women were told they could continue to kiss, but that they had to "tone it down."

"The women refused to modify their behavior, began swearing at the seating hosts and complained that they were being singled out for their sexual orientation," the club said.

The code of conduct a announced before each game a specifically mentions public displays of affection that are "not appropriate in a public, family setting." Hale said those standards are based on what a "reasonable person" would find inappropriate.

Guerrero denied she and her date were groping each other, saying that along with eating garlic fries, they were giving each other brief kisses.

On Tuesday, Guerrero said a Mariners director of guest services had apologized to her. The team spokeswoman could not immediately confirm that.

After the story broke, the Mariners were blasted by the sex-advice columnist Dan Savage, who wrote about the incident on the blog of the Stranger, an alternative weekly paper.

"They go out of their way to say it's a quote-unquote family setting," Savage said. "As a gay season-ticket holder, we've never been quite sure what that means exactly. I constantly see people see making out. My son has noticed and asked, 'Do they show the ballgame on women's foreheads?"'

Savage called for a "kiss-in" to protest against the Mariners.

Web sites have been swamped with blog postings for and against Guerrero and her date. And the story has people talking in Seattle.

"I would be uncomfortable" seeing public displays of affection between lesbians or gay men, said Jim Ridneour, a 54-year-old taxi driver. "I don't think it's right seeing women kissing in public. If I had my family there, I'd have to explain what's going on."

"It all depends on the degree," Mark Ackerman said as he waited for a hot dog outside Safeco Field before Wednesday's game. "Even for heterosexual couples."

Since the incident, Guerrero's job and her past have come under scrutiny. She works at a bar known for scantily clad women and was a contestant on the MTV reality show "A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila," in which women and men compete for the affection of a bisexual Internet celebrity.

"People are saying it's 15 more minutes for my career," Guerrero said of the ballpark furor, "but this is not making me look very good."

In 2007, an Oregon transit agency chief apologized after a lesbian teenager was kicked off a bus when a passenger complained about her kissing another girl.

Also in 2007, a gay rights group protested a Kansas City, Mo., restaurant they said ejected four women because two of them kissed, and a Texas state trooper was placed on probation in 2004 for telling two gay men who were kissing at the state Capitol that homosexual conduct was illegal in Texas.

"There's a double standard. That's the bottom line," said Pat Griffin, director of the It Takes a Team! Education Campaign, an initiative from the Women's Sports Foundation to eliminate homophobia in sports.

Washington, D.C. - The National Transportation Safety Board said today that the government should be doing
more to prevent accidents and enhance safety for the traveling public. The Board updated its list of Most
Wanted Safety Improvements, noting instances where federal agencies had given unacceptable responses to
NTSB recommendations or were moving too slowly to implement recommended safety measures.
Two items were removed from the list, one because action on it is almost completed, and the other because the
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) refused to adopt the recommended safety enhancement.
Established in 1990, the Most Wanted list is a way for the NTSB to focus attention on needed safety
improvements in all modes of transportation. The list highlights recommendations that the Board believes
would significantly reduce deaths and injuries.
"Our recommendations are derived from the hard lessons we have learned over the years investigating many
tragic accidents," said NTSB Chairman Ellen Engleman Conners. "Quite simply, implementing these measures
will save lives."
Aviation:
In aviation, the Board reviewed the status of recommendations in six issue areas --
Runway incursions - The Board's recommendation calls for a system that ensures safe movement of airplanes
on the ground and provides warnings of probable collisions/incursions directly to flight crews in the cockpit. To
illustrate the potential dangers of a runway incursion, the Board viewed a simulation, prepared by NTSB staff,
of a near-collision at Los Angeles last August involving two large airliners, a B- 747 and a B-737. This incident
was not reported by air traffic control officials as an operational error. "The fact that such incidents are not
being reported casts doubt on the FAA's claims that the runway incursion rate is declining," Chairman
Engleman Conners said. "The FAA needs to review its reporting process." Status: The Board changed the
classification of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) response to this recommendation from "Open-
Acceptable Response" to "Open-Unacceptable Response."
Fuel/Air Vapors in Fuel Tanks - Recommendations call for interim measures to reduce flammable fuel/air
vapors in fuel tanks and, longer term, airplane design changes to eliminate the generation of such vapors. Status:
Due to the lack of FAA initiatives on interim measures, the Board decided to reclassify the short-term
recommendation from "Open- Acceptable Response" to "Open-Unacceptable Response." On the longer-term
recommendation, the Board found the FAA's response acceptable. The Board is anticipating that the FAA will
begin the regulatory process to require a flammability reduction system in the near future. Overall, the Board
noted that implementation was progressing too slowly.
Aircraft Icing - To reduce the dangers of flying in icing conditions, NTSB recommendations call for expedited
research and upgraded airplane design and certification standards. Status: Noting that the oldest icing
recommendations on the list date back eight years, the Board changed the classification of this issue from
"Open-Acceptable Response," but progressing slowly, to "Open-Unacceptable Response" based on the FAA's
lack of progress in this area.
Audio, Data and Video Recorders - Recommendations specify at least two hours of audio recording capability,
back-up power sources, and a requirement for video recorders in the cockpit to give investigators more
information to solve complex accidents. Status: The Board noted some progress by the FAA on a few
recommendations in this issue area but retained the overall classification of "Open-Unacceptable Response."
Child Restraints - Recommendation asks for a requirement that infants and toddlers under age two be safely
restrained on takeoff, landing and in turbulence. Status: Unacceptable response from FAA.

By Ken Schoolland

I hear it from some of the nicest people one would ever meet. Some dear friends of mine, whom I respect very much, say that all illegal immigrants are criminals because they broke the laws that control who may come into this country. And since these immigrants are criminals, we donA?'t want that kind of person here.
Sadly, such accusations confuse what is legal with what is moral. American history is filled with people who broke unjust laws and were morally justified in doing so.

Legality a Morality
The American Revolution was fought by men and women who broke the laws of England and of King George III. Had they been arrested, as was Nathan Hale, they would have been hanged for treason to the Crown. If breaking the law makes one a criminal, then the Founding Fathers were all criminals. But no one still believes that today.
Dred Scott and thousands of other slaves defied the Fugitive Slave Acts and ran away, "stealing themselves" from Southern plantation masters in the early 1800's. Those who were arrested were returned to their slave "owners," and anyone found trying to help them escape to Canada was prosecuted as well.
Thankfully, many juries exercised jury nullification. Declaring that the law was unjust, juries often refused to convict operators of the Underground Railroad. No one today would claim that a runaway slave was a criminal. Indeed, anyone who forcibly returned Blacks would now be considered guilty of having collaborated with the slave masters a albeit legal slave masters.
In the 1930's there were hundreds of Jews who came to American shores aboard the SS St. Louis, forcibly sent back by immigration quotas to perish in Hitler's concentration camps. Thousands or millions of potential refugees watched in desperate disappointment.
But suppose those passengers had defied immigration law and jumped ship in Miami harbor. Would anyone today call them criminals? I think not. Indeed, those who returned Jews to their persecutors might be considered guilty of collaborating with villainy a albeit legal villainy.

Treasures of the Earth
It may be illegal for people to seek freedom and opportunity in this country, but it isn't immoral. I admire the courage of immigrants who leave all that is familiar to them, risking life and limb on stormy seas and deadly deserts, in order to move to a strange land where everything is unfamiliar and potentially hostile.
Most of our ancestors moved for freedom and opportunity and we are the beneficiaries. Thank God they weren't arrested and sent packing, as were violators of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Indeed, we might wonder if we could have mustered the same measure of courage if we had been in their shoes.
It is convenient and simple to exclude new newcomers by calling them criminals. But the real reason is much more complex. For some people it is a fear of other races. For others it is a fear that newcomers might work hard and will "take" jobs. Others fear the opposite a that newcomers will not work hard and will take welfare.
In the first case, many immigrants are great entrepreneurs who offer jobs to Americans. Other immigrants take jobs, but they never "take" jobs that are not willingly offered to them by eager employers.
I often ask audiences: "Suppose you are an employer and you know only one thing about two job applicants in front of you: one is native-born and the other is an immigrant? Who would you expect to be the harder worker?" Audiences overwhelmingly favor the immigrant. Why? Americans are surely good workers. But the very act of migration is seen as proof of vigor, ambition, determination, and courageous self-reliance.

Choice: Employees Right, Employers Right
Americans have a moral right to make these choices for themselves a as employees and as employers. Says Robert W. Tracinski, a senior writer for the Ayn Rand Institute:

"The irrational premise behind our nation's immigration laws is that a native-born American has a 'right' to a particular job, not because he has earned it, but because he was born here. To this 'right,' the law sacrifices the employer's right to hire the best employees a and the immigrant's right to take a job that he deserves. To put it succinctly, initiative and productiveness are sacrificed to sloth and inertia.
"The 'American dream' is essentially the freedom of each individual to rise as far as his abilities take him. The opponents of immigration, however, want to repudiate that vision by turning America into a privileged preserve for those who want the law to set aside jobs for them a jobs they cannot freely earn through their own efforts....Any immigrant who wants to come to America in search of a better life should be let in a and any employer who wants to hire him should be free to do so."

To the legalist, however, who places law above moral right, the employer who hires as he pleases is a criminal. The legalist wants stricter penalties against employers who defy state mandates on hiring. Once again this is reminiscent of historic laws that were used to criminalize employers who dared to hire Blacks, women, and Jews. Violations were illegal, maybe, but not immoral.

Welfare Magnet?
But what of the immigrant who takes welfare? Isn't this a burden on society that must be stopped?
Yes, it is. But politically powerless newcomers are no more responsible for the welfare system in this country than they are responsible for the tyranny and corruption in a country that they are fleeing. Okay, stop the flow of welfare, but at the same time remove the plethora of [anti-] labor laws that make it difficult for newcomers to be hired.
It is wrong to assume that most immigrants come to America to get on the welfare gravy train. If this is true, then immigrants would be moving away from states with the lowest welfare and into states with the highest welfare.
My research (The Journal of Private Enterprise, Spring 2004) demonstrates that the opposite is true. In overwhelming numbers, both the native-born population and the foreign-born population through the decade of the 1990's moved away from states with the highest welfare and into states with the lowest welfare. While there are some high profile exceptions, most immigrants seek opportunity, not welfare.
The brilliant economist, Julian Simon, demonstrated that immigrants are a great source of productivity and economic growth. They always have been. Simon declares that most wealthy industrial nations will depend on the productivity of immigrants to provide revenues for the increasingly costly welfare demands of a native-born population.

Moral Principles
Governments do not decide morality. Governments behave morally when upholding moral action and behave immorally when suppressing moral action. Morality is based on principles far more constant and profound than the variant whims of majority votes.
The people who understood this best, were those rebels who defied the law of the day to pen these words: "WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men Are Created Equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
To George Washington this meant, "...Athe bosom of America is open to receive not only the opulent and respectable stranger, but the oppressed and persecuted of all nations and religions, whom we should welcome to a participation of all our rights and privileges."

The Ratzinger Effect: more money, more pilgrims a and lots more Latin

Richard Owen in Rome
With donations to the Church from around the world almost doubling and pilgrims pouring into Rome in ever-greater numbers, Vatican watchers are beginning to reassess the two-year-old pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI and noting a positive a?Ratzinger effecta?.

Today the Vatican will publish the Popeas a?motu proprioa? decree allowing broader use by Roman Catholics of the Latin Tridentine Mass a the pontiffas last act before leaving for his traditional summer holiday.

The move, which amends the Second Vatican Councilas decision in the 1960s that worship should be in the vernacular, is regarded as yet another sign of Benedictas conservative attachment to tradition and doctrine. Some senior Catholics in Britain have accused him of a?encouraging those who want to turn the clock backa? and say that they fear the rite will revive preVatican II prayers for the conversion of a?the perfidious Jewsa?.

The Vatican denies this, however, and points instead to the huge appeal of the Latin Mass a and Gregorian chant a not only for disaffected right-wing Catholics but also for many ordinary believers who value a?the sheer beautya? of the ancient liturgy. a?This is a Pope who a contrary to conventional wisdom a is in tune with the faithful,a? one Vatican source said.

The unassuming and scholarly Benedict does not have the star appeal of John Paul II. At 80, he does not travel as much as the a?Pilgrim Popea? or write as many documents.

Andrea Tornielli, the biographer of several popes including Benedict, said that when crowds packed into St Peteras Square to hear Benedict in the early days of his pontificate, a?many people attributed this to the John Paul effecta?, or the global media coverage of the late Popeas courage in the face of illness and death.

It was increasingly clear that although Benedict a formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, John Paulas long-serving doctrinal adviser a lacked the showmanship and charisma of his predecessor, his a?simple and directa? assertion of values struck a chord with believers, Mr Tornielli said.

The distinction between a?the good and progressive John Paul and the bad conservative Benedicta? was a false one, Mr Tornielli told The Times. a?Ratzinger was John Paulas closest adviser for over two decades, and many of his initiatives as Pope a including the Tridentine Mass a are developments of John Paulas own ideas.a?

While less theatrical than his predecessor, Benedict makes no secret of enjoying the a?dressing upa? side of the job, reviving ermine-trimmed robes, elaborate headgear and dainty satin shoes. He has grown more adept and relaxed at greeting people.

Cardinal Sergio Sebastiani, head of economic affairs at the Holy See, said that the a?remarkable increasea? in both donations and numbers of pilgrims showed that there was a?a symbiosis, a mutual sympathy between this Pope and Christian people everywherea?.

Presenting the Holy Seeas annual budget yesterday, Cardinal Sebastiani noted that not only had it closed last year with a surplus of a2.4 million, partly thanks to diocesan donations, there had also been a a?huge jumpa? in a?Peteras Pencea?, the annual church collections given directly to the Pope to use for charity, from $60 million (A?30 million) in 2005 to $102 million. a?The days when people talked of papal bankruptcy are past,a? said Marco Tosatti, Vatican correspondent of La Stampa.

John Paul, who is on the road to sainthood, continues to be an attraction: with up to 35,000 pilgrims filing past his tomb in the crypt of St Peteras every day, the Vatican is considering moving the tomb into the Basilica.

Record numbers attend Benedictas weekly audiences, and seven million people a year now visit St Peteras, a rise of 20 per cent. Similar increases are recorded for pilgrimages to Catholic shrines at Assisi, Lourdes, Fatima in Portugal and Madonna di Guadalupe in Mexico. a?This is a Ratzinger phenomenon,a? reported La Repubblica.

For some he remains a?Godas Rottweilera? or the a?Panzerkardinala?. He has disappointed liberals who hoped that he would relax rules on priestly celibacy or the use of condoms to help to fight Aids in Africa. Next week the Vatican is due to issue a document reasserting that only the Catholic Church is a?the Church of Christa?, a move that risks offending Anglican and Orthodox Christians.

Benedictas statements on issues from the Latin Mass to dialogue with China were promised a?imminentlya?, then delayed, and Curia department heads long past retirement age have not been replaced. a?Running the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is not the same as running the world-wide Church,a? one insider said. a?Benedict tends to appoint men he knows and trusts a regardless of whether they are right for the job.a? Above all, he does not delegate as the ailing John Paul II did, and such is his reputation as a theologian that no one dares to offer him advice.

This has led to a series of avoidable public relations disasters, most notably his speech on a?faith and reasona? at Regensburg University last year, when he inflamed Muslim opinion by appearing to suggest that Islam was inherently violent.

In Brazil in May he angered indigenous populations by asserting that the arrival of Christianity in the New World did not amount to a?the imposition of a foreign culturea? on native peoples, and his off-the-cuff assertion that Catholic legislators who voted for easier abortion in Mexico should be excommunicated had to be hastily a?clarifieda? by Father Federico Lombardi, his spokesman.

More recently the Vatican was dismayed when a reference to a a?frank exchange of viewsa? on a?delicate questionsa? after Tony Blairas farewell meeting with the Pope was taken to mean the two men had had a row. Such lapses, says John Allen, another of his biographers, make him appear a?tone deafa?. a?For those who know Benedictas mind, it can be painful to watch his carefully reasoned reflections become capsized in the court of public opinion by a stray phrase thatas obviously open to misinterpretation.a?

Please read and let me know how you would analyze this article:The Water Crisis: Analysis and Proposals

By Celine Tan

Water and sanitation is the first of five priority action areas under the
WEHAB plan for the post-WSSD implementation of sustainable development.
The challenge of providing safe and clean water and sanitary conditions for
an increasing world population, in the face of rising inequities, is
phenomenal.

Forty percent of the worldas population, in 80 countries, currently suffer
from serious water shortages. A billion people worldwide lack access to
safe drinking water and 2.4 billion people lack access to adequate
sanitation (Global Economic Outlook 2002).

Yet, the biggest threat to universal access to clean water and adequate
sanitation is not mother nature but corporate globalisation. Privatisation
of water is aggressively exported to the developing world under the rubric
of poverty reduction and debt relief strategies, free trade and economic
development. By turning a scarce resource into an economic commodity, the
worldas economic leaders and policy planners claim that existing water
resources can be managed and consumed efficiently in accordance with
competitive market principles. These claims are not only misguided, they
are deceitful. There are two myths being projected: first, that placing a
price on water will encourage conservation and wise water consumption.
Secondly, that market competition will lead to more consumer choice and
better services. In reality, the water sector is monopolistic when placed
in the hands of the market. It is thus alarming that the commodification of
water resources is now heralded as the answer to the worldas water woes.

Monopoly and subsidies for corporations

Water is a US$400 billion global business, controlled by a handful of
European transnational companies and consortiums, namely French
multinationals Vivendi and Suez Lyonnaise, SAUR and British water companies
Thames Water, Anglia Water and United Utilities. The global drive towards
privatisation of water services is thus pursued not by a collective of
democratically elected governments acting in the interest of the worldas
population, but by a cartel of corporations motivated by profit and market
conquest.

To make matters worse, these companies are subsidised by their governments
(and invariably their taxpayers) through support from domestic export
credit agencies, and by multilateral development banks, such as the World
Bank and the African Development Bank. They are also subsidised by
developing countries who raise credit from international financial
institutions to upgrade their water systems prior to private takeover. This
corporate subsidy comes at the expense of consumers, most of them in
developing countries, who are made to pay for what is a necessity of life.
For the poor this means no access to water.

Additional loans to facilitate the privatisation process are raised by
developing country governments from multilateral and bilateral sources.
Often, these loans are also used to finance the creation of an a?enabling
environmenta for foreign water and wastewater investors. This includes the
drafting of local investor protection legislation to guard against
re-nationalisation of the water industry and to provide for hefty
compensation for any attempt to renege (for good reasons) against the
privatisation contracts.

In many cases, corporate access to a developing countryas water system is
paved by a loan or debt relief conditionality requiring the poor or
indebted country to privatise its water and sanitation services. For
example, the IMF insisted that Tanzania privatise its Dar es Salaam Water
and Sewerage Authority (DAWSA) as a condition of its debt relief package
under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.

Fallacy of privatisation

Experience shows that the privatisation of water services cannot ensure
universal delivery of safe water and efficient sanitation. Privatisation
imposes additional financial obligations on governments. They may have to
bail out failed privatisation project, and also shoulder the costly legal
risks of rescinding a privatisation contract with a wealthy transnational,
even if the companyas performance is unsatisfactory. Argentina, Hungary and
Bolivia have found that the legal claims for compensation by private water
companies in Tucuman, Szeged and Cochabamba respectively, have made
terminating contracts prohibitively expensive.

The dominance of foreign water companies and the liberalised investment
climate - mostly facilitated by structural adjustment, and now under trade
agreements including those under the WTO A? in developing countries will
also ensure that a large portion of profits from water privatisation will
not accrue to the countries themselves but are repatriated abroad instead.

The imposition of full-cost water pricing as a result of privatisation will
only deprive more and more people of access to clean and safe water by
forcing poor communities to seek alternative sources of water for
consumption, such as untreated well water and water from sewage-ridden
urban rivers.

Forced upon rich and poor, consumers and industrial producers, similar
rates for water use will also result in greater income disparity and deeper
social cleavages, leading to higher risks of civil unrest. In 2000, martial
law was declared in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba as a result of
city-wide riots precipitated by high water prices. A private consortium led
by International Water doubled the water prices to city residents. Water
bills went up by 35% and some, twice that. The World Bank supported
full-cost water pricing and prohibited any use of its structural adjustment
loans to subsidise water services for the poor.

Future fears and WSSD outcomes

There is no agreement on the text in the WSSD Draft Plan of Implementation
that commits governments to supporting the UN Millennium Development Goal
of halving, by 2015, the proportion of people unable to reach, or afford,
safe drinking water and access improved sanitation (paragraphs 7 and 7[alt]).

However, the most pressing concerns over universal coverage of water and
sanitation services are not expressed in these bracketed paragraphs.
Rather, they are reflected in the general lack of political will
demonstrated by developed countries to address the systemic issues leading
to a crisis of sustainable development in the south, and the alarming
emphasis placed on public-private partnership funding and implementation of
sustainable development programmes. The relinquishing of responsibility by
developed countries is marked by their reluctance to commit to specific
disbursements of ODA and by repeated references to voluntary partnerships
and initiatives as a means of financing WSSD programmatic outcomes.

In the absence of firm commitments by governments, Type II partnerships on
water and sanitation services will only increase private sector involvement
in this crucial area. The private sector is already identified as a key
implementer of the a?Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for All
Initiativea involving 28 countries, six UN agencies, the World Bank, and
the Asian and African Development Banks.

Another major threat to universal access to water and sanitation is
liberalisation under the WTOas rules. Although Member countries have the
right to liberalise at their own pace, and even choose not to open up a
sector under the WTOas General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), there
is tremendous pressure especially on developing countries to liberalise.
Thus in the ongoing negotiations at the WTO, developed countries are
submitting extensive ArequestsA that seek access to every sector in the
developing world, including water services and sanitation.

If developing countries succumb, privatisation of water services initiated
under World Bank and IMF structural adjustment programmes could become
permanent under the binding rules of the WTO. Once a country is locked into
the GATS regime, the right of its government to regulate liberalized
service sectors will be diminished, paving the way for foreign
transnationals to enter the domestic market. Any attempt to reverse the
situation would be subject to WTO disciplines and penalties.

Any real effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goal must therefore
include commitments to review loan conditionalities that impose
privatisation and countries must not be pressured to offer water services
under GATS liberalisation. Essential services should be exempted from GATS.

Conclusion

Privatisation does not address the deeper economic and ecological issues of
water shortages. Questions of why there are water shortages in countries
not under water stress are not resolved by shifting responsibility of
service provision to private companies. Water management and water
distribution are also key factors in determining water supply and universal
coverage. Until and unless rich countries fulfil their commitment to
provide resources for developing countries to build solid, cost-effective
water delivery systems which support the needs of the worldas population
equitably and ecologically, the water woes of the world will not go away.

At the same time, all governments need to recognise and support the
diversity and replication of community water management systems and
practices. These have proven in many countries to be the most sustainable
approach to rural water management for rural populations. The WSSD process
and the last 10 years of the work of the CSD have called for good and best
practices in sustainable development. However, where water resources are
concerned the trend and emphasis are privatisation which has proven
destructive.

Firm commitments must be made at the WSSD to reverse the trend of corporate
takeover in the water and sanitation sector, rather than to accelerate the
process of privatisation and corporate monopoly. Undermining the sovereign
power of governments to regulate supply of water in their countries and
passing the bucket onto private transnationals to steward the worldas water
resources would probably be a most anti-development and anti-ecological step.

I am extremely intested in online economies that could emerge. It seems like somehow if the open source initiatives or wikipedia somehow involved micropayments people could be paid for very small increments of effort. For example someone could sit down from a third world country and earn some money by doing some creative work. This could be all online. I have visited Second Life.com and they allow people in this virtual world to sell their virtual products in real money. Just wondering if more of this could be done and the effect that could have.
